USDA is projecting the 2007 corn crop at 12.065 billion bushels and the soybean crop at 2.9 billion bushels, according to budget documents issued Monday.
To encourage renewable fuels, the White House also proposed to allow farmers to harvest biomass crops on 27 million acres enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. "These lands could continue to provide various environmental benefits while being used from biomass production," the Bush administration said in recommendations for changing farm programs. Wildlife would continue to benefit, too, if rules allowed biomass harvest only after the nesting season.
